Wine Cap AKA The Garden Giant Mushroom is a fungus that is perfect for breaking down organic matter in your Living Soil Grow beds or grow containers indoors or out!
Your garden beds work hard every season, but are you sure there is a high level of fungus that helps breakdown the organic matter? Would you like to use the best known variety for gardeners?
That is where the BuildASoil Wine Cap Mushroom Garden Bed Kit comes in. This kit introduces a powerful fungal partner, often called the Garden Giant, to your beds so it can quietly weave through your soil, break down carbon rich material, and help cycle nutrients for healthier plants and bigger harvests 🍄
We have paired North Spore Wine Cap sawdust spawn with two cubic feet of premium organic BuildASoil straw, so you have everything you need to inoculate a new or existing bed in one simple project. Instead of guessing at which materials to use, you can open the box, build your bed, and let the fungi get to work.
Wine Cap mushrooms are famous for their vigorous growth and forgiving nature. They can establish quickly in outdoor beds, often producing their first flush within a couple of months when conditions are right, and they can continue to contribute to the same bed year after year as you add fresh woody material like straw or hardwood chips. Many growers enjoy the mild earthy flavor of the mushrooms, while others are simply thrilled to see the visible sign that their soil food web is thriving.
Over time the Wine Cap mycelium helps:
- Break down straw and other woody materials so they become plant available nutrition
- Build a darker, richer soil structure that holds moisture more evenly
- Support overall soil life, creating a more resilient living bed
- Expand into nearby areas, allowing you to use colonized material to start new beds
Whether you are starting a brand new raised bed or refreshing an older one, this kit is a simple way to level up your biology and add another layer of diversity to your garden ecosystem
What is included
- North Spore Wine Cap (Stropharia rugoso annulata) sawdust spawn, suitable for outdoor garden beds
- Approximately two cubic feet of premium organic BuildASoil straw, a perfect food source for the Wine Cap mycelium
- 1 kit will cover approximately (2) 4x4 beds at a depth of 3/4 inch.
Key details
- Best suited for living soil containers indoors or outdoor beds and garden paths that stay in contact with the soil
- Needs a carbon rich substrate such as straw or hardwood chips to colonize and fruit
- Not intended for growing on logs
- One kit can inoculate roughly sixteen square feet of garden bed, depending on how thick you build your layers
- Once established, colonized material from this bed can be used to inoculate new areas
Caring for your Wine Cap spawn and straw
- Open the shipping box soon after arrival
- Unfold the top of the spawn bag so there is some air space above the block
- Make sure the filter patch on the bag is exposed and not pressed against plastic or cardboard, so the organism can breathe
- If you are not ready to build your bed right away, keep the spawn in the refrigerator and use within about six months
- Store the straw in a dry, cool area until you are ready to lay out your bed
Instructions for use
- Choose a suitable spot in your garden where the bed can stay in contact with the soil. Gently rake aside leaves or debris until you are down to bare soil or grass.
- Spread a thin layer of straw over the soil, about one inch deep. This is your base food layer for the fungi.
- Break up the Wine Cap sawdust spawn into small chunks with clean hands. Evenly sprinkle the spawn across the entire straw layer so you get good coverage.
- Add a second layer of straw or other woody material on top, about two to three inches thick. You want the spawn sandwiched between layers of carbon rich material.
- Water the bed thoroughly so that the straw is moist all the way through but not flooded.
- Keep the bed evenly moist during the establishment period, especially in hot or dry weather. Over time you can top up the bed with fresh straw or wood chips to feed the growing mycelium.
With a little moisture and patience, the Wine Cap mycelium will begin to knit through the straw and soil, helping to transform your garden into a richer, more biologically active space. Mushrooms are a welcome bonus, but the real win is the long lasting boost to soil life that supports every crop you grow.
